5 REASONS: WHY DANGAL FAILED IN BEATING SULTAN’S OPENING RECORD?

According to famous trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Dangal manage to collect 29.78 Crore on day one which is a good amount but everyone was thinking it will break the record of Sultan (36 Crore), so what are reasons behind it, let’s take a look:


  1. Non-Holiday release: Well it’s a reality of Bollywood that which ever film had done huge business especially in its opening week is all due to some big holiday whether a National holiday or a religious festival, example like Happy New Year which is the biggest opener so far had collected 44 Crore on day one due to Vishwakarma day which comes after Diwali. In past few films like Dhoom 3 (36 Crore) had done good business on opening day because of huge buzz and their mass appeal, Dhoom 3 did well on day one even without any holiday or something because it was a commercial masala film which usually Indian audience like while Dangal is quite different.

  1. Demonetization: This very thing has a great to play in destroying some business of Dangal. Post Demonetization only one film manage to get the tag of a hit is Dear Zindagi which is enough to prove the effect of Demonetization on the entertainment industry and only Stars like Aamir and SRK can win the battle with this curse called Demonetization.

  1. Non-Masala movie: Dangal is not a typical Masala movie which Indian audience generally prefer. It doesn’t even have trendy item songs and not even a typical heroine because the heroines of this movie are the heroes at the same time and they are not love duby types, in fact, their are exactly opposite fighting with the evil. It’s a kind of film which does business on word of mouth and that’s what it gonna do.

  1. Less Successful music: Music plays and important part in Bollywood movies and if we talk about the music of Dangal then it’s of Situational songs which one enjoy or understand during the movie. Just like PK or 3 Idiots the music of Dangal also gonna popular once it gets successful at box office. Talking about the music of Sultan then it was a quite successful music as compared to Dangal’s.


  1. Star Cast: Sultan was packed with stars like Salman, Anushka, and Randeep Hooda while Dangal has Aamir only while all other actors are rather new or not so popular. Most importantly all the lead actors of Dangal are new comers except Aamir.

Some other factors like Summer vacations, Bigger production house (YRF), Eid release were also the factors which helped Sultan.

2016: A YEAR OF SPORTS FILMS

First of all Sultan (300 Crore) than MS Dhoni (133 Crore) and recently Dangal which is still running in the theaters and already become the 2 nd  highest grosser of the year, this year is surely all about Sports Drama films. Other films which are also Sports oriented were Azhar, Freaky Ali, Do Lafzon Ki Kahani but these films didn’t do well at the box office. 2017 also gonna saw some most awaited sports films like Sachin: A Billion Dreams. If we look at this year business wise then it’s a very bad year and demonetization at the end make it even worse.
